Salomon X-Adventure/Raid Series
U.S. Teams Compete for Spot in Raid Gauloises
Kirkwood, CA.- August 17-18, 2002
Race Results  Preview  Day 1  Austria Race

Day two began chilly with a paddle across Lower Bear Reservoir and sent teams on foot (and in wetsuits) on a 1-mile scramble along the shore of Bear River Reservoir to a 100-foot rappel. A scramble back along shore led to a short swim to an island and back, before more scrambling led back to the canoes. The round-trip finished with Team Spie have the fastest time, and putting seven minutes on the leaders.

Team GoLite put in an impressive 19.2-mile mountain bike time, threatening for the overall win, but took a wrong turn on the final 5.9-mile foot section that cost them 40 minutes, and eventually 1st place.

"U.S. Team Montail finished 7th overall, but was the second U.S. team to finish, and Salomon USA was 9th overall, but took the third and final U.S. spot in the Raid Gauloises..."
Team Allianz Salomon maintained its steady charge and took the win at the Kirkwood stop on the Raid Series tour, with a cumulative stage time of 17:16:31. French Team Spie placed 2nd (17:34:43), Intersport Extrem from Spain was 3rd (17:40:59), and GoLite 4th overall (17:48:10).

U.S. Team Montail finished 7th overall, but was the second U.S. team to finish, and Salomon USA was 9th overall, but took the third and final U.S. spot in the Raid Gauloises in Krygysztan next year.

In an effort to include more American teams in the European tour, race sponsor Salomon offered the 4th- and 5th-place U.S. teams four plane tickets to Europe and a free entry fee to one of the final two stages on the tour.

Team Off the Couch and Team Kathleen Turner Overdrive (that means me!) will head to either Kitzbuhel, Austria, for the race on September 13-15, or Grenada, Spain, on October 11-13 with the possibility of earning enough overall points to earn a spot in the Raid Gauloises.

Tune in for a report on one of the two remaining European races, as the author heads overseas to compete on international soil.
