Jon Bowermaster, 45, Stone Ridge, NY
Writer, specializing in adventure, remote places and the environment.
I've
written six books and contributed to a variety of international magazines
ranging from National Geographic to the Atlantic Monthly. I've participated
in first descents by raft of Chile's Futaleufu and China's Shuilo He,
dogsledded more than 2,000 miles in Greenland, the Northwest Territories and
Antarctica. Leader of the recent Islands of Four Mountains expedition, I've
sea kayaked on the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Indian oceans.
Ngan Nguyen, 30, Boston, MA
Asia Project Manager, Oxfam.
Born near Vietnam's Mekong Delta, Ngan's family fled Saigon on the last day
of the war in 1975. (Her father was a helicopter pilot ferrying the last
remaining Americans and favored South Vietnamese to ships offshore.)
Relocated to New Orleans, she went to university at Tulane, and then received
her master's degree at Harvard. Working first with UNICEF, now with Oxfam,
she has revisited Vietnam 20 times.
Polly Green, 30, Durango, CO
International kayak competitor.
Has probably spent more time in a kayak than any of the rest of us. While
Ngan's father was flying helicopters for the SVA, Polly's father was based in
Danang, fighting with American Army troops.

has appeared in Outside, Men's Journal, National Geographic Adventure and
many national publications.
Peter Getzels, 45, Washington, D.C.
